Founded in 1851 under a bush arbor in Edwards, Mississippi, Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church began as a place of worship and spiritual encouragement for its community. When flooding along the Big Black River prevented some members from attending, they formed Sand Hill M.B. Church, extending the community's legacy of faith.
On January 10, 1868, trustees Bro. Charlie Hunter and Bro. Fenton Shelton purchased two acres of land, where the first sanctuary was constructed. Additional land was purchased in 1904 under the leadership of Rev. John Lewis. Other pastors who helped shape the church's history included Rev. Willie Hardy, Jr., and Rev. Matthew Canada.
Rev. Joseph Boone began serving as pastor on August 1, 1992, and faithfully led the congregation for more than 30 years. The Richardson-Rozell Fellowship Hall, constructed in 1998, created space for meals, gatherings, and community fellowship. On February 27, 2005, Rev. Darrell Brown was ordained under Rev. Boone's leadership; he served as youth minister before becoming assistant pastor. In December 2005, the Angels of Praise debuted under the leadership of Kimberly Rolling-Jones.
Through Sunday School, Bible study, youth programs, music, and outreach, the church continued to strengthen its ministry. On March 10, 2022, it adopted the name Greater Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, embracing a new chapter while honoring its historic foundation. A food pantry, participation in the Annual Senior Citizen Food Drive, and the addition of women's and young adult ministries furthered its commitment to service and fellowship.
On May 18, 2025, Rev. Dr. Michael T. Robinson was installed as pastor of Greater Mt. Pleasant. Today, he leads the congregation as it continues its legacy of faith, unity, and outreach in Edwards and beyond.
